The power to see and affirm

Though ostensibly about chess, competition, and parental pressure, the linchpin of “In Search of Bobby Fischer” is actually that moment when the mother affirms the boy’s goodness, saying “That’s the most important thing there is.” Her seeing and affirming is itself a form of goodness – and a powerful one indeed, for it bolsters that which longs to grow.
