One must cover one’s tracks

Disappearance

Little bird, beating heart
Door ajar, near
is love’s fear
in safety’s cage
Little trickster

Something else
So it wasn’t death, deathless bird,
weeks later hopping in our yard.
It was a condition of which I’d never heard:
a bird’s days wingless and catless.
A cold snap
My salt dashed has not kept you, bird,
though my mother said it would.
You’ve left the fence, you’re ochre now,
and the boy, bereft, is wonder-whyed
and blue.
A bird’s now or never
I deem to see
the fear in your eye
and your wish to fly
but when I open you die
to stay.
