Pebbles are enough

Trail of the tossed pebble
An act pulled back
into the mind
Wishing not to be caught
In that fraught
history
Sew the hour
Into your collar
to pay your way
in a troublesome land
Some people are the tall trees
Who hold up the sky
Country morning
Everyone’s out –
The deer, the sheep,
the rabbits, the cows …
Sounds in the silence car
Scraping
Ticking
Bells
Warning
Engine
Air
Things you don’t expect
Even when you know they’re coming.
The heart worn out.
The final breaths.
Laughing in bed
It’s so absurd!
The love hiding in cupboards
Love in a corner,
under a shelf,
shadowed love,
dusty love,
crinkly love;
young, ripe and bursting love;
the sad, agonizing,
longing kind;
listless love,
weary love,
angry and killing love;
bored, yellow, and
dutiful love – and
yes, even, waiting patiently:
God’s love,
quiet,
in no hurry at all.
